THE Melbourne Cup will visit Nowra tomorrow as it continues its worldwide tour leading up to the first Tuesday in November.

Nowra has a connection with the Melbourne Cup from its first running in 1861, with the winner - Archer - reportedly being walked from Nowra to Melbourne.

He would return to Melbourne and win again the following year, and the racecourse at Nowra was named in his honour.

There will be a full day of activities, with the Archer Racecourse central to proceedings, hosting a welcoming breakfast and evening cocktail party.

"The visit provides a fantastic opportunity for our community to get up close to this national icon," Shoalhaven City Turf Club secretary Lynne Locke said.
